SteelStax - Cultural Enhancement Plan

The goal of the non-profit arts, broadcasting and education partners in SteelStax is to provide access to arts, culture, education and broadcast resources so that each individual in our community has the opportunity to reach his or her creative potential.

The purpose of the Cultural Enhancement Plan is to advise the community of programs that are being considered for the SteelStax facilities, to invite discussion on the proposed programs, and to encourage individuals and organizations to enter into discussion about the use of the SteelStax facilities to expand their cultural offerings to the community

Please use this blog posting as an opportunity to comment on the plan.

SteelStax Important Part of Bethlehem's Transformation

As this country continues to grow, it becomes more and more apparent how incredibly diverse it has become. Recognizing the need to constantly adapt to our changing world, Bethlehem has become part of the growing list of cities determined to revitalize its areas that have fallen on hard times or into disrepair, transforming them into arts, entertainment and lifestyle hubs that attract people from near and far.

In the coming years, the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. property on the city's SouthSide will grow into a bustling arts, entertainment and cultural district teeming with fine dining, upscale shopping, musical and performing arts and more. The SteelStax arts and entertainment complex, created from a partnership between ArtsQuest and PBS 39, will aid this revitalization by respecting the heritage of Bethlehem and injecting a sense of vitality and celebration into the region through a combination of creativity, arts and education.

By joining Bethlehem Opera Theatre, Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Hispanic American League of Artists, Pennsylvania Youth Theatre, Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School Academy of Video and Media Arts and Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra with PBS 39 and ArtsQuest, SteelStax will provide the community with a shared, programming-rich venue right in their own backyard. On any given night, it may be possible to enjoy live theater, opera, art cinema, Latin dance lessons or great, live music.

Richard Florida, the author of The Flight of the Creative Class, is recognized as the new voice for urban revitalization. According to Florida, university towns have the most potential for helping to revitalize an area. With two colleges at each end of Bethlehem, and the pending development of the former Steel property, the future of this city of 70,000 looks extremely promising.

The development of SteelStax and the surrounding properties will help Bethlehem become a magnet for employers looking for a talented and skilled workforce. SteelStax will create cultural amenities, including diverse recreational and educational opportunities, helping enhance the region's image and making it a desirable destination for the community and for visitors.
